V module.  Mentoring process – what does it mean for Manager?

The structure of the mentoring process depends on the communication rules defined in the mentoring contract and the form of mentoring chosen. It could be:

  • purely face-to-face mentoring – when the mentor meets the group of mentees or individual mentees regularly face-to-face for a defined period of time;
  • purely e-mentoring – when the mentor communicates with group of mentees or individual mentees regularly online in the special platform;
  • blended mentoring – when the face-to-face mentoring is combined with e-mentoring.

 For the face-to-face mentoring the structure of the mentoring process should be:

  • Selection of the mentoring Manager;
  • The Manager interviews and selects mentees;
  • The Manager allocates mentees in groups (in group mentoring only);
  • Each mentee will define what kind of mentor he/she would like to have; in group mentoring this will be defined by the group of mentees;
  • The Manager selects mentors;
  • Training of mentees and mentors for mentoring;
  • First meeting of mentees and mentors, mentoring agreement will be made;
  • Mentees set goals they want to achieve;
  • Mentoring process ongoing (1 hour at a time, once or twice a month, total duration 6-12 months)
  • The Manager collects feedback and supports mentees and mentors during the whole mentoring process
  • At the end of the process: future plans and actions of mentees
  • Feedback, evaluation of the mentoring process.

 For the e-mentoring the structure of the mentoring process remains the same, but the communication between 3M actors is done using online tools – Skype, e-mail and special platform.

 For the blended mentoring the structure of mentoring process is combined of face-to-face sessions, communication using online tools and regular meetings in the special platform. It is recommended to have 3 face-to-face sessions during the e-mentoring process – one at the beginning of the process, one in the middle and one at the end of the process.
